I:F Action Alert Update:
A Victory! Tennessee Parental Notification Bill
I:F presents the information below from Chris Sanders, Chair and President of the Tennessee Equality Project.
Dear Friend,
I am pleased to inform you that Sen. Rusty Crowe (Johnson City) has asked that SB2079 (the parental notification bill for school clubs) be placed in the General Subcommittee of the Senate Education Committee. What that means is that the bill has effectively been taken off notice and is not currently a threat.
Thanks to all your contacts with Sen. Crowe and your state senators and the work of our allies at Tennessee Education Association and the ACLU of Tennessee, we achieved an important victory that will allow students freely to participate in Gay-Straight Alliances and other school clubs of their choosing.
We must never underestimate the power of citizens making their voices heard. We will continue to monitor this legislation in case there is a change. But for now we have cause to celebrate.
Thanks for all you do to advance equality in Tennessee.
Yours,
Chris Sanders
Chair and President, Tennessee Equality Project
